Students are expected to have the following items with them at each class:
1. textbook
2. assignment notebook (included in student handbook)
3. notebook and a folder for handouts (see below)
4. written homework when due (see below)
Students are required to bring a notebook to class each day. All handouts, articles, and other class materials should be organized in a separate section of the notebook. The date for each class should be listed in the margin of the daily notes section of the notebook. Notebooks will be graded during the last week of each quarter. The grade will be based on the quality and comprehensiveness of notes taken during the quarter as well as the percentage of class materials retained. Please remember that notes should be taken during class discussion and films as well as formal lectures. Classroom assignments are graded on a 0-5 point scale and are given periodically, usually in the 85-minute block. Cooperative learning tasks usually involving primary source analysis are typical for this type of assignment.
Homework
Reading and/or written homework will be assigned for each class. Each written assignment will be graded on a 0-5 scale. One point will be deducted for each day late. Written homework will be collected at the start of class on the date due. All written homework must be typed or written neatly in ink.
Tests and Quizzes
Tests will be based primarily on class notes, assignments
and discussions, along with assigned readings and homework assignments. Tests will be given approximately every one
or two chapters and will consist of multiple-choice, matching, short-answer and
essay questions. Quizzes will be given approximately once a week and may be
unannounced. You will be asked to cover
a substantial amount of material during the school year; therefore it is
essential to keep up with the reading!
Makeup Work
Missed homework assignments due to excused absences, will be due on the day following a student’s return to class. Makeup tests and quizzes must also be completed by the end of the day following a student’s return to class. Exceptions will be made for prolonged absences (more than two days out of school) in which case a student must see me immediately upon their return to make appropriate arrangements for the completion of the work in question. It is the responsibility of the student to see me in order to schedule all makeup work.
Class participation is a portion of the overall grade. This grade will reflect the attentiveness, focus, and involvement of the student in day-to-day activities. Students are expected to pay attention during class and are encouraged to ask questions and participate in class discussions. Students are also expected to show consideration and respect to me and to all members of the class.
Term Grades
Term grades will be comprised of the following:
Tests – 50%
Quizzes – 25%
Class participation, Notebook and Class assignments – 10%
Homework – 15%
Extra Help
Students are encouraged to seek additional help as necessary. I will generally be available for extra help and makeup work after school, Monday – Thursday. As there will be times when I am required to be away from my room after school (faculty/department meetings etc...) please see me ahead of time to schedule an appointment.
-Student adherence to school policies on attendance and behavior will facilitate the class achieving its objectives. Tardiness and absence from the class, even when excused, can result in falling behind. Please do not bring the following to class: hats, food, drink, phones, and other disruptive devices.
